Energy & Environment Biography

Before entering Parliament in 1997 he was Professor of Public Policy at the Southampton Institute. He was also formerly the leader of Southampton City Council.

During his time in Parliament Alan has focussed on, amongst other things, issues relating to energy and climate change, waste, fuel poverty, local government and housing, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and renewables. He became the Shadow Minister for Generation and Transmission in autumn 2015 and Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change in October 2016.

Alan was a member of the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, as well as the Environmental Audit Select Committee.  He has been a member of the Public Bill Committees for every major piece of UK energy and climate change legislation in recent years, including the Climate Change Act 2008.  He also chairs a number of cross-party groups on these issues.

In his spare time, Alan enjoys working on his ongoing project of powering his home in Southampton with microgeneration, growing his own vegetables and coping with the highs and lows of being a Saints supporter.
